Wrap-and-plant technology to manage sustainably potato cyst nematodes in East Africa

چکیده

Abstract Renewable eco-friendly options for crop protection are fundamental in achieving sustainable agriculture. Here, we demonstrate the use of a biodegradable lignocellulosic banana-paper matrix as seed wrap potato plants against cyst nematode (PCN), Globodera rostochiensis . Potato nematodes devastating quarantine pests globally. In East Africa, G. has recently emerged serious threat to production. Wrapping potatoes within lignocellulose substantially reduced field inoculum and increased yields by up fivefold Kenya, relative farmer practice, whether or not impregnated with ultra-low doses nematicide abamectin (ABM). Markedly, ABM-treated banana paper at ~1,000 times lower than conventional recommendations PCN inoculum. Assays analyses revealed that disrupts parasite–host chemical signalling adsorbing critical hatching infective juvenile host location chemicals present root exudate. Recovery experiments confirmed adsorption these chemicals. Our study demonstrates waste organic material sustainably manage PCN, potentially other pests, while increasing yields.

Hatching behavior of potato cyst nematodes from the canary islands.

The present work investigated early hatching differences in naturally occuring field populations and newly reared populations of potato cyst nematodes from the Canary Islands. Hatching behavior of the two species appears to be distinct, with more juveniles hatched from G. pallida that hatch earlier and over a shorter time than G. rostochiensis. The hatching rate of 3-year-old PCN populations wa...

Novel RNA viruses within plant parasitic cyst nematodes

The study of invertebrate-and particularly nematode-viruses is emerging with the advancement of transcriptome sequencing. Five single-stranded RNA viruses have now been confirmed within the economically important soybean cyst nematode (SCN; Heterodera glycines). From previous research, we know these viruses to be widespread in greenhouse and field populations of SCN. Several of the SCN viruses ...

Worldwide distribution of potato-cyst nematodes and their importance in crop production.

The potato-cyst nematodes Heterodera rostochiensis and H. pallida are important pathogens of potatoes, a basic food crop. When soil populations of either species are high, potato yields are often less than the seed planted. Apparently, these nematodes originated in the Andean mountains of South America, the home of the potato. One or both species have spread from this region to approximately 47...

An Anteriorly Presenting ‘Wrap Around’ Popliteal Cyst

The article describes a case in which a popliteal cyst was identified presenting as a mass on the anterior aspect of theright tibia. This occurred as a result of polyethylene wear debris from previous total knee arthroplasty. Although alternativediagnoses for an anterior tibial mass are more likely, a popliteal cyst must be considered, particularly if the patient has ahistory of total knee arth...
